At Movement Matters, we are always curious about new ways to enhance well-being. A while back we’ve started to explore the world of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) and how it might fit into our therapeutic treatments. While we’re not yet experts in ASMR, our fascination with silence, sounds, and rhythm has led us to experiment with incorporating ASMR elements into our practice.
What is ASMR?
ASMR, or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, is a sensory phenomenon where specific sounds or visuals trigger a tingling sensation, usually starting at the scalp and moving down the spine. This experience is deeply relaxing and can help reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance mindfulness.
How does ASMR work?
ASMR works by triggering a neurological response to certain stimuli, often sounds or visuals, that produce a calming, tingling sensation. These triggers vary widely from person to person but commonly include soft whispering, tapping, gentle crinkling of paper, or even the sound of hair being brushed. The tingling sensation, often referred to as “tingles,” is typically accompanied by a deep sense of relaxation and can be highly effective in helping people unwind.
Is everyone sensitive to ASMR?
It’s important to note that not everyone experiences ASMR. Sensitivity to these triggers varies, and while some people may find certain sounds or visuals incredibly soothing, others may not feel the same effects. This variance is perfectly normal and part of what makes ASMR such a unique experience. At Movement Matters, we understand that ASMR is not a one-size-fits-all approach, which is why we’re focused on exploring and improvising with different sounds and techniques to see what resonates best with our clients.
Our journey with ASMR
Our approach to ASMR is very much a journey of exploration. We’re drawn to the subtle power of sounds and how they interact with the body and mind. In our treatments, we’ve always been attentive to the rhythm of touch and the importance of silence. Now, we’re experimenting with how incorporating gentle, subtle sounds can deepen the sensory experience during our sessions.
ASMR in our light touch treatment
One area where we’re integrating ASMR is in our light touch treatments. These sessions are already designed to be calming and restorative, focusing on gentle, mindful touch. By adding subtle sound elements—such as soft whispers, tapping, or even the rustle of fabric—we aim to create an even more immersive experience. This improvisational approach allows us to be attentive to your responses, adjusting sounds and touch in real-time to enhance relaxation and awareness.
Our obsession with silence and sound
At Movement Matters, silence and sound have always played a crucial role in our treatments. We’re fascinated by the way these elements can shift the energy in a room, create a meditative atmosphere, or draw attention to the present moment. As we explore ASMR, we’re particularly interested in how these subtle sounds can enrich the sensitive and sensory experiences that our clients find so soothing.
Why ASMR might enhance your experience
While we’re still learning and experimenting, we believe ASMR has the potential to offer several benefits:
- Deepened Relaxation: The combination of light touch and subtle sounds could enhance the calming effect of our treatments.
- Increased Mindfulness: Focusing on delicate sounds during your session might help you stay more present and attuned to your body.
- Unique Sensory Experience: By integrating ASMR, we’re creating a sensory journey that is both soothing and intriguing.
